Backsliding, is that you? Jesus is calling all of His lost sheep to return before it is too late. Any day that goes by that you do not return to the Lord is a day wasted, you are walking on thin ice. For we do not know if we should die in our sins.
What is backsliding? How do you know if you are backsliding? Well if you have to ask yourself if you have backslidden chances are that you are in that state now. To put it simply backsliding is when you allow sin in your life, it becomes a habit again. You find yourself back to the things you used to do before you became a Christian. Also, most harmful is that backsliding can lead a Christian unto a loss of salvation. Many are taught that once a Christian always a Christian. That you can live a life of sin and continue in this path and you reason that since you asked the Lord into your life some years back you have your free ticket and will go to heaven. The bible does not teach that at all. This teaching stems from certain verses taken out of context or not viewed with the bible as a whole and what the Lord tells us. Granted, I am not saying that a backslidder has lost their salvation, no. But there is danger in doing so, one is treading on thin ice, and why would we want to do that? Is not our soul and our walk with the Lord so important than to risk it for vanities?
“But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear”. – Zechariah 7:11
Praise God that He desires to draw backslidders back to himself:
“The Lord is faithful to discipline those He loves, drawing backsliders back to Himself.” – Hebrews 12:5-11
If you are feeling convicted when you take part in your sins, whether they are hidden sins or blatant for all to see you may hear that small voice in your head. Your awakened spirit that once walked with the Lord is flashing red signs in your mind, danger, danger! The Holy Spirit is convicting you and drawing you back in order that you come to repentance. Repentance is turning away from your sin, confessing it with your mouth. The conviction is not to just to feel guilty about it. But the Lord wants to restore the relationship with you again. He wants you back in the fold.
Heed the Warnings
It is so important for the backslidder to heed these warnings and not to say, oh tomorrow, next week, after Christmas, just one more: _____ fill in the blank to whatever your sinful vice is, and then I will come back to the Lord. I will repent tomorrow, yet again when you wake up in the morning you continue in that sin. The reality is that over time as one continues in their sin and disregards the Holy Spirit’s convictions then the heart becomes hardened.
Soon it is hard to let that sin go, it is not too bad and you no longer feel guilty about it, but reason it away. You don’t want to part with it, it becomes part of who you are and your lifestyle.
The Lord warns us in Hebrews 5:4-6:
“For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame”
Enlightened are the believers, those who once walked with the Lord, who confessed Him as Savior. The bible tells us that those who walk away from the Lord and do not repent will be judged along with the wicked! Who does the Lord consider to be the “wicked”? These are those who walk in darkness, the unbelievers! The Lord in his word tells us it is possible for those who are enlightened to be judged with the wicked.
And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed” – Isaiah 1:28
The word warns us that we cannot be partakers of Christ while participating in the world’s sins. The Lord wants us to be set apart, sanctified unto Him. “Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” – James 4:4
It is interesting to note what David said when he sinned with Bathsheba, pay attention to the words:
“Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.” – Psalm 51:11
David repented when the sin was brought to light, it was exposed. Is your sin being exposed? Is the Holy Spirit convicting you and bringing it to light? Or have you ignored and quenched the Spirit to the point that you are comfortable with your sin? You say to yourself, aww, well I’m not too bad, look at Christian John down the street, he does xyz, at least I’m not doing that. Friend, let the Lord deal and convict your brother, we do not know how many warnings he has had already, perhaps his last has come and gone and he has made his decision already. Right now let the Lord deal with your heart if you are in that place. Please be in prayer today and right now if you find yourself in a backslidden situation.
The Lord is merciful to forgive and welcome you back:
“Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.” – Jeremiah 3:22
” I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely; for mine anger is turned away from him.” – Hose 14:4
Jesus is Coming Soon! Don’t be caught backslidden
Jesus tells us he will come back like a thief in the night. He says that the days of his return will be as in the days of Noah. Well, these days are now, He is soon coming and he is warning his sheep that have gone astray to return to Him today. He will pardon your sins. Do not wait before it is too late, we don’t know what tomorrow will hold for us.
“Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee”. – Revelation 3:3
My prayer for the lost sheep – Heavenly father please draw your own back unto you. Heal their wanderings, speak to their spirit. Heal their brokenness and cover their transgressions by your precious blood. Thank you Lord for your mercy and faithfulness. Thank you for welcoming the prodigal back into your fold. You are the Good Shepherd. Let us be ready for your coming and not be ashamed to meet you face to face. Amen

A simple message. The image is grainy but the message makes the point.
One of my all time favorite classic Christian songs. Everytime I listen to it it’s as fresh as yesterday. God is so good and merciful. He meets us where we left him last. This is a reminder how sometimes we come to a place in our lives where we have to lose all, our health, finances, material possessions, even family and friends, all of it so that we come back to Christ. Our soul is so precious to the Lord, so valuable.
